Access Independent Living Services Principles Include:
- Consumer-centred service delivery approach
- Service based on the consumers self-identified service needs
- Services are available 24/7, 365 days a year
- Services meet fundamental needs with activities of daily living (ADLs and IADLs) – assistance is provided with getting up, dressing, bathing, eating, breathing, communicating
- Services are considered non-medical as they are to assist with activities of daily living even though we provide assistance with ventilator and tracheotomy care, inter-muscular injections, catheterizations, g-tube eating, etc.
- Those who know best the needs of people with disabilities and how to meet those needs are the people with disabilities themselves
- The needs can be met most effectively by programs which provide a variety of services, rather than having to go to several different agencies for services
- People with disabilities should be as integrated into the community of their choice

Nurturing Assistance
Nurturing assistance is a time-limited service that provides physical assistance to parents with physical disabilities who have young children. Its function is to physically assist parents to undertake the tasks involved in caring for their children, as if the parents were doing it themselves. It can also help strengthen the emotional and bonding aspects of the parent-child relationship. The service can last from birth until the child is 12 years old.
Nurturing Assistance is a positive addition to those special situations in which the person with a physical disability who requires attendant services is planning to raise children. In the same way that people with physical disabilities need personal supports—attendant services or personal assistance services—nurturing assistance enables parents with disabilities to function in their home, raising healthy and loving children.
Access Independent Living Services has been funded to provide Nurturing Assistance services for parents with physical disabilities. Access Independent Living Services provides these services directly or acts as banker for the funds and purchases services from the Consumers primary Service Provider.
Nurturing Assistance services are currently limited to consumers receiving services through Attendant Outreach or Assisted Living (formerly known as Supportive Housing) service programs. Nurturing Assistance can be provided as a separate service or be incorporated into the day-to-day delivery of services.
