Staff Testimonials
Independent Living Assistants (ILAs) take pride in building relationships with their consumers while providing personal support services and lifestyle assistance to individuals with physical disabilities for things such as housekeeping, meal preparation, pet care, and escorts for appointments in order to enable consumers to live on their own. By acting as an extension of the consumer (hands, feet, eyes, etc.) Access’s ILAs aim to allow consumers to direct their own lives.
Access Independent Living Services is an equal opportunity employer and encourages resumes from people who are reflective of the diverse communities we serve.

I enjoy helping others, especially those in need of help. The passion and love I have for what I do as a personal support worker is why I chose Access Independent Living Services. Growing up and taking care of my siblings motivated me to care for others. People in community work settings, whether those who are ill, elderly, or in need of help with daily tasks, need someone to assist them and might not have family to assist.
This is where I come in to play a big part in their lives by assisting. I show compassion and respect. It is great to know that my clients are happy and satisfied with having their privacy and dignity maintained. It feels most rewarding to see the joy and comfort in their faces, knowing that someone cares for them and is there to assist. I make sure my clients are comfortable, safe, and enjoy emotional and physical well-being, and I offer gentle assistance with daily tasks.
It means so much to let my clients help in whatever way they can, which empowers and encourages them. For example, giving a hair brush and letting them brush their hair however they want, or giving lotion so they can rub their hands. This makes my clients happy and makes them feel good about themselves. It gives them a happy feeling to know they are in control and safe with you. I always give my clients choices and ask how they want something. to be done. It warms my heart when they say thank you and see you tomorrow when the services are done.
Working with Access over the years has been a wonderful and satisfying experience. The management, staff, and colleagues have been wonderful, helpful, and empowering. I am grateful for being a part of this highly professional agency and will always be there to serve, participate, and promote this wonderful workplace.

I have been a part-time ILA for a few months and just finished my probation period. I am glad I found Access Independent Living immediately after finishing my PSW training. The company has given me the opportunity to manage my time with work and family. This flexibility is what I needed as a mother of two young girls.
At Access, I was provided with all the necessary training, and management works closely with ILAs to ensure quality service to every consumer under our care, as well as making sure we have a healthy working environment. I am thankful for being part of a company that makes a difference and helps consumers maintain the quality of life they deserve independently.

My journey with Access Independent Living Services began in a way I could never have anticipated, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.
It all started when I accompanied a friend to an interview at the York Square location. At the time, I was on extended maternity leave with my daughter and wasn’t planning to return to work just yet. As I sat in the Staff Office, the Program Manager noticed me and asked if I was also there for a job interview. I explained that I was only there to support my friend. In that brief encounter, she observed how I was attending to my daughter and encouraged me to apply for a position, saying she believed I’d be a good fit for the organization.
On May 26, 2005, I filled out an application form without high expectations. To my surprise, I received a call a few days later inviting me for an interview. Although I was hesitant because my children were still young, I decided to give it a shot. I expressed concerns about my limited availability due to my two-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son, but the Program Manager reassured me they’d accommodate my needs. To my delight, I was offered a position shortly after, and on June 8, 2005, I completed my orientation and officially started my career with Access Independent Living Services.
I began as a part-time staff member at the York Square location, working three hours per pay period for the first three months. While picking up shifts was challenging due to seniority, I remained dedicated, always striving to grow within the organization and exceed expectations. Two years later, I was promoted to full-time staff in the Outreach Program. During this time, I continued working part-time at York Square while managing my full-time Outreach responsibilities.
After dedicating 11 years to the Outreach Program, I transitioned to the Mobile Program, where I spent the next four years as an Independent Living Assistant (ILA). In September 2023, I was promoted to Program Supervisor. Just four months later, in January 2024, I advanced to Interim Program Manager for the Aldebrain location. After successfully completing my probation period, I was officially promoted to Program Manager on July 12, 2024.
Throughout my career, I’ve been actively involved in various roles and committees, including:
- Serving on the Joint Health and Safety Committee
- Acting as a Union Steward for the Mobile and Outreach teams
- Serving as an Infectious Prevention and Control (IPAC) Champion
- Forming and leading the Access Workers’ Socialization Committee
- Acting as Staff Co-chair for staff meetings
My journey with Access Independent Living Services has been both fulfilling and transformative, helping me grow personally and professionally. I’m grateful that my dedication and capabilities have been recognized and celebrated over the years.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an Independent Living Assistant was seeing the smiles on consumers’ faces after meeting their needs and forming meaningful relationships with them. As a Program Manager, it’s incredibly fulfilling to hear staff say that I’m doing a great job. I deeply appreciate that Access Independent Living Services is a multicultural organization that values diversity and inclusivity. This environment has expanded my understanding of different communities and improved my cultural competency.
The company’s family-oriented culture played a significant role in my decision to join and stay. I look forward to continuing to contribute to this organization and making a positive impact in my current role and beyond.

I have heard nothing but positive things about how Access is run by the people who currently work here. The management team is ambitious, and they clearly support their employees to be the best versions of themselves by providing appropriate training and ongoing support. I joined Access because they value diversity. I want to work with people who have different ideas. Access is the best company to work for.
The work keeps you grounded, you get to appreciate the life you have, and you get to genuinely make a positive difference in someone’s life. I have a passion for taking care of consumers, and it gives me satisfaction and fulfillment when I show care to people with disabilities.
I have built a strong bond with some of the clients and consumers because I know how to make them comfortable and independent.I like the challenges, and it feels like a calling for me to help people like that, and I AM A PEOPLE PERSON.

My journey with Access Independent Living Services began in September of 1989. Initially starting as a part-time employee, I eventually transitioned to a full-time role, finding immense fulfillment in my work. Choosing a career in independent living assistant services over long-term care or a hospital setting has been a deliberate and deeply rewarding decision.
From the beginning, I was drawn to the philosophy of independent living assistant services. Unlike the structured environment of long-term care facilities or hospitals, independent living services allows me to support consumers in their own homes. This setting provides a unique opportunity to help individuals maintain their autonomy and continue living in familiar, comfortable surroundings.
What I find most rewarding about my work is witnessing the positive impact it has on the lives of my consumers. Helping them maintain their independence means empowering them to live with dignity and self-respect. Every small achievement, whether it’s mastering a new skill or simply managing daily tasks, is a testament to their resilience and the effectiveness of the support I provide.
Over the years, the consumers I assist have become like family to me. This close-knit relationship is something I cherish deeply and is a unique aspect of independent living services. The trust and bond we share enhances the quality of care I can provide and makes my work profoundly meaningful. Knowing that my support contributes to their well-being and happiness gives me a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Throughout my tenure at Access Independent Living Services, the company and my colleagues have been incredibly supportive. Their encouragement and assistance have been invaluable, helping me to grow both personally and professionally. This supportive environment has reinforced my dedication to providing the best possible care and has made my experience even more rewarding.
Working as an independent living assistant is more than just a job for me; it is an integral part of who I am. The personal connections I’ve formed and the lives I’ve touched over the years reinforce my commitment to this field. I am proud to be part of a profession that prioritizes individual needs and supports people in leading fulfilling, independent lives.
In conclusion, my decision to pursue a career in independent living assistant services has been one of the most rewarding choices of my life. It allows me to make a significant difference while building lasting, meaningful relationships with those I serve. The joy and satisfaction I find in my work reaffirms my dedication to helping others maintain their independence and quality of life.
I am honored to continue my journey with Access Independent Living Services, and I look forward to many more years of making a positive impact on the lives of those I serve. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

I work with Access Independent Living Service as an independent living assistant. After completing my Personal Support Worker (PSW) certification at George Bown College, I wanted to put my knowledge and skills learned into caring for others within an organization that shared my values and vision of person-centered care.
Access Independent Living Service’s vision of Independence—For All Together is something I admire because, as people age or encounter medical challenges resulting in physical support needs, they are comforted by services provided by Access Independent Living Service.
Services that allow them to stay in their homes and community and live a fulfilling life. Working with Access Independent Living Services as an independent living assistant enables me to provide person-centered care, demonstrate integrity, collaborate with my consumers and coworkers, and provide quality services. All of which align with my employer’s values.
These are a few of the reasons I chose to work with Access Independent Living Services over working in long-term care or the hospital sector. Their corporate policies cover wellbeing, inclusion, diversity, respect, and dignity for all. As an employee at Access for over twelve years, I find my job very fulfilling. Currently, I work at the newest location, Ridgeford Charitable Foundation at 23 Thundergrove, where I can provide excellent care for my consumers as I have a supportive work environment.
The culture represents a family where staff are caring, kind, and compassionate to consumers and colleagues. I have an outstanding manager who displays immaculate leadership skills; she always takes the time to check in on staff, ensuring that our emotional, mental, and physical well-being are being taken care of as we work to take care of our consumers.
My Program Manager is never too busy to answer her phone, and if the call is missed, she will return the call promptly. I am happy I chose to work with Access Independent Living Service and recommend our brand to everyone I meet.
Thank you, Access.
