Before my injury, my life was normal; I had independence. I was thriving, I had my wife and kids, and I was going to be a chef. I had a social life and was going to the gym every day.

When I first arrived at Lyndhurst, it was a very difficult time for me. Everything was new, and I had to adjust not only to my disability but also to the loss of my privacy and independence. The pandemic made things even harder, as I couldn’t see my kids during this period. I stayed at Lyndhurst Rehab from February until May 16th. After that, I transitioned to Bellwoods, which marked a new phase in my journey.

At Bellwoods, I had to learn to direct my own care. It was a six-month transition period where I was taught how to manage on my own. I had opportunities to explore the community and learn how to use public transportation. This experience was crucial in helping me regain some independence.

Losing my independence and privacy was incredibly challenging, especially since I couldn’t be with my kids. On top of that, I went through a divorce, which added to the emotional burden. Learning to cope with my disability during this time was difficult, but I had a strong support system.

Access has been a tremendous help in my journey. They have implemented care that truly benefits me, and their staff understands my needs deeply. Initially, I was bitter after my surgery, but the support from Access has changed my mindset. I’ve built strong bonds with my personal support workers (PSWs), and they have become like family to me.

The bond with my PSWs is incredibly important. The staff genuinely cares about consumers. They provide a level of care that goes above and beyond, understanding my schedule, likes, and dislikes. They always listen to us and ensure our safety during their visits. This sense of family is especially important for individuals who don’t have other support systems.

Living with a disability means I’ve had to learn to do things on my own again, using my upper body strength and arranging my own transportation. Directing my care and adjusting to a different lifestyle have given me a sense of hope. I no longer feel isolated because of the strong relationship I have with the staff. We learn from each other, and I feel safe and secure knowing that they are there for me 24/7.

I would highly recommend Access to anyone in need of support. The staff and management deserve applause for their dedication and the way they handle any issues that arise. My journey has been challenging, but with the help of Access, I’ve been able to navigate these difficulties and find a new sense of independence and hope.

Before joining Access, I was not receiving the care I needed. I faced numerous obstacles that I couldn’t overcome while living at home, and I had limited privacy. Access has provided me with more independence and freedom. The majority of the staff have helped me become more independent, and they are very nice and accommodating. I have overcome many obstacles that were hindering me while I was living at home. Access has enabled me to gain my independence. I can now live my life the way I would like to. I have more freedom and am able to make my own rules and run my life the way I like.

From the moment I started receiving their services, I was impressed by how helpful the manager and staff members were. They have always been there to support me and assist with whatever I needed.

I am Sayyed-Hadi, and I would like to talk to you about my challenging situation.

A year ago, I had a fall accident and had a severe injury in the cervical spine, which changed my life after surgery and recovery because I could not stand on my feet and walk. This case was a big challenge for my family and I. Besides that, my most important concern was the matter of housing and being able to live together again.

After 10 months passed, I was discharged, Access Independent Living Services graciously, and kindly provided us with this opportunity so that we could live together again. A peaceful, safe, and supportive place that turned many of our worries into happiness and peace.
